    Dr. Samantha Reid appointed Associate Vice-President, Students, at UBC Vancouver

    I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Samantha Reid as Associate Vice-President, Students, at UBC Vancouver, effective April 15, 2024.The role is responsible for the strategic leadership and planning required to advance the goals and priorities of the Vice-President, Students portfolio and the Student Strategic Plan.

    Professor Janice L. Stewart appointed Deputy Provost at UBC Vancouver

    It is my pleasure to announce that Professor Janice L. Stewart has been appointed as Deputy Provost for a five-year term, starting May 15, 2024.As Deputy Provost, Professor Stewart will focus on providing strategic leadership and oversight for academic affairs, faculty recruitment and retention, and ongoing faculty relations matters. They will also support the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Vancouver, in the realization of the university’s strategic academic aspirations.

    UBC planning a balanced operating budget for 2024/25

    UBC is reporting a healthy financial position as part of its 2024/25 budget proposal presented to the Board of Governors’ Finance Committee.The report was presented to the committee in advance of going to the full Board of Governors on March 27, 2024. It acknowledges that UBC, like many other universities, is navigating a challenging financial landscape. Broader economic conditions, geopolitical tensions and issues specific to higher education are creating a measure of instability and uncertainty for the post-secondary sector as a whole.

    Inviting proposals for the 2024 Continuous Learning Advancement Fund

    UBC Vancouver faculty members are invited to submit letters of intent (LOI) for Continuous Learning Advancement Fund (CLAF) projects for 2024 funding.CLAF supports the creation, renewal and expansion of non-degree learning opportunities at UBC Vancouver, to help increase the university’s capacity to serve continuous learners in British Columbia, as set out in UBC’s Strategic Plan.

    Launching a search for a new Vice-President, External Relations

    I am writing to let you know that UBC has embarked on a search for a new Vice-President, External Relations. The current Vice-President, Robin Ciceri, has completed her term and will transition into retirement this summer.The Vice-President, External Relations, reports to the President and has responsibility for providing strategic leadership for university communications and issues management, government relations and community engagement, ceremonies and events, campus and community planning, as well as the Learning Exchange and Robson Square.

    Leadership change within the Human Resources portfolio

    I am writing to let you know that Marcia Buchholz, Vice-President, Human Resources, will be leaving UBC to take up a new opportunity as Vice-President, People and Culture at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta. Marcia’s last day at UBC will be March 31, 2024 and interim leadership of the HR portfolio will be announced shortly.

    Metro Vancouver transit strike - confirmed

    CUPE Local 4500, a union representing 180 Coast Mountain Bus Company Transit Supervisors, have confirmed they are escalating labour action to shut down bus service across Metro Vancouver, starting today (January 22). This has resulted in a full-scale shut down of bus and SeaBus services for at least 48 hours. At this time, it is not expected to affect SkyTrain, Canada Line, HandyDART, West Coast Express and other contracted services, which should continue to operate.

    Update on possible Metro Vancouver transit strike

    Yesterday, CUPE Local 4500, a union representing 180 Coast Mountain Bus Company Transit Supervisors, announced they intend to escalate labour action to shut down bus service across Metro Vancouver beginning at 3am on Monday, January 22.This potential job action may result in a full-scale shut down of bus and SeaBus services for at least 48 hours. It would not affect SkyTrain, Canada Line, HandyDART, West Coast Express and other contracted services, which should continue to operate.
