Advancing equity at UBC: Q&A with Dr. Arig al Shaibah on the 2025 StEAR progress report

The 2025 Progress Report on the Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism (StEAR) Framework tells the story of the ongoing engagement and progress on implementing UBC's equity and anti-racism priorities.

In this Q&A, Dr. Arig al Shaibah, Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion, reflects on key milestones, areas of learning, and what’s ahead in the next phase of the StEAR Framework.

She reminds faculty and staff that "equity work doesn’t always have to be a big, visible initiative. Sometimes, it starts with small everyday decisions: how you run a meeting, how you listen, how you advocate for someone’s inclusion."

    Despite decades of progress, women remain underrepresented in science and technology (STEM) careers.New research by UBC psychology professor Dr. Toni Schmader and her team offers insight into one key reason why: the persistent belief that men and women are “naturally” interested in different kinds of work. Even when discrimination isn’t overt, this belief subtly shapes which opportunities women are offered—and which they aren’t.

    Join the 2025 CTLT Summer Institute (Aug. 18 – 22) for practical workshops designed to support new instructors in building strong foundations for teaching and learning. Hosted each year in August, the event focuses on teaching and learning fundamentals in addition to enhancing participants' understanding of sound teaching practices and how to implement them in their teaching contexts. Workshop topics range from refining a syllabus/lesson plan to incorporating active learning and effective assessment in their teaching.
