William Cheung named director of Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries

Marine biologist William Cheung has been appointed director of the UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries.

The appointment is effective July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2026 with the possibility of an extension.

William is an international leader in studying how climate change affects marine biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the vulnerabilities and responses of ocean-dependent human-natural systems to global change. A Professor and Tier II Canada Research Chair in Ocean Sustainability and Global Change, his contributions to marine sciences are exceptional with his research directly addressing policy-relevant questions that span local to global scales and cut across oceanography, marine ecology and fisheries, with consequences for economics and social sciences.

    Lingít: a love language for community—Taku River Tlingit First Nation and UBCO partner to document language reclamation and resilience

    Indigenous language in B.C. is facing a critical state of emergency, largely due to historical Canadian government policies aimed at assimilating Indigenous peoples into English-speaking, non- Indigenous society. However, located in northern B.C., the Children of the Taku, a non-profit society connected to the Taku River Tlingit First Nation, is leading a revival of their language.
