Juliana Laing appointed as new Board Secretary

We are pleased to announce that, following a rigorous national search, Juliana Laing has been appointed by the Board of Governors as UBC’s Board Secretary effective July 1, 2025.
Juliana is a seasoned governance professional with over 20 years of experience advising Board Chairs and senior leaders across Canada and the U.S. She has held leadership roles at the Association of Governing Boards (AGB) of Universities and Colleges in Washington, DC and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where she developed expertise in higher education governance and interdisciplinary collaboration. Juliana also brings years of experience in supporting Boards of Directors in multiple organizations in the B.C. public and private sectors.
We would like to thank Karen Hakkarainen for her 6 years of service as Board Secretary. We are grateful for her efforts in building the secretariate office and enhancing UBC’s governance. Karen’s last day with UBC will be June 30th.
