Announcing UBC's 2023 Distinguished University Scholars

The Distinguished University Scholar awards recognize exceptional members of faculty who have distinguished themselves as scholars in research and/or teaching and learning. The award is conferred by the President on the recommendation of an Adjudication Panel.

Here are the 10 new Distinguished University Scholars at UBC in 2023:

  • Dr. Purang Abolmaesumi - Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science
  • Prof. Joel Bakan - Allard School of Law
  • Dr. Allan Bertram - Chemistry, Faculty of Science
  • Dr. Lara Boyd - Physical Therapy, Faculty of Medicine
  • Dr. Scott Hinch - Forest & Conservation Sciences, Faculty of Forestry
  • Dr. Catherine Johnson - Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences, Faculty of Science
  • Dr. Daniel Justice - English and Critical Indigenous Studies, Faculty of Arts
  • Dr. Ara Norenzayan - Psychology, Faculty of Arts
  • Dr. Mary O’Connor - Zoology, Faculty of Science
  • Dr. Chris Overall - Faculty of Dentistry
  • Dr. Sunera Thobani - Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts

    Register for the New to UBC Connections Program - UBC Vancouver

    The New to UBC Connections Program is open to faculty and staff in Vancouver in their first year of employment who wish to meet people from outside their faculty or department.The program was piloted successfully in November 2023 and has received a positive response from new faculty and staff.Participants will be matched in groups of three-four and will meet every four to eight weeks to participate in activities or events as a group, based on shared areas of interest.

    UBC’s amended Conflict of Interest Policy (SC3)

    On March 27, the Board of Governors approved amendments to UBC’s Conflict of Interest (COI) Policy (SC3) and its associated Procedures, effective as of April 2. The policy was amended to fully reflect the annual COI reporting requirements for UBC staff members, as well as address various best practices that have emerged since the last revision.A copy of the approved Conflict of Interest Policy and its associated Procedures is available on the University Counsel website.
