Extension of appointment of Dr. Dermot Kelleher, Dean, Faculty of Medicine at UBC Vancouver

This message was sent to executive, deans and other senior academic leaders, academic heads, directors and managers, and senior professional leaders in Vancouver.

23 June, 2020

We are pleased to announce that last week, on the recommendation of Santa Ono, the Board of Governors approved the extension of Dr. Dermot Kelleher's appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for a second five-year term, commencing September 1, 2020.

Under Dr. Kelleher's leadership, and in collaboration with members of the Faculty, the UBC community, and health partners, the Faculty of Medicine developed its strategic plan for 2016-2021. Called Building the Future, the strategic plan lays the foundation for building on the Faculty's strengths in education and research, and for fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration to meet the ever-evolving demands in health education and care. Since the inception of the strategic plan, the Faculty has seen the successful implementation of many projects and initiatives that support its mission: ‘Health through knowledge and innovation’.

Dr. Kelleher's leadership extends beyond the Faculty to collaborative partnerships with the Ministries and provincial health authorities, and other health partners.

I am confident that, with Dr. Kelleher's leadership, the Faculty of Medicine will continue to grow its impact on transformative medical research and health education for the benefit of all — locally, nationally and globally. I look forward to working with Dr. Kelleher in his second term.

I would like to thank the President's Advisory Committee and all who participated in the consultation during the process for consideration of the extension of Dr. Kelleher's appointment.

Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Vancouver
