June 13, 2022
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Arig al Shaibah as the new Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion, starting July 1, 2022.
In this role, Dr. al Shaibah will work to advance human rights, planning and evaluation, education, and systems change across the university. She will also be exploring ways to provide leadership for accessibility, and in partnership with other units, help implement the Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence Task Force recommendations, and the university’s implementation of the inclusion action plan. Dr. al Shaibah will lead the Equity and Inclusion Office working in partnership with units across both campuses to embed equity, diversity, inclusion and access into the structure, policies and processes of UBC.
Most recently, Dr. al Shaibah served as McMaster University’s inaugural Associate Vice-President, Equity & Inclusion. Prior to that, she served as Dalhousie University’s Vice-Provost Student Affairs and Interim Executive Director for Human Rights & Equity Services, and as Assistant Dean, Student Life and Learning at Queen’s University. Over the last 15 years, Dr. al Shaibah has maintained her commitment to addressing systemic inequities, promoting intercultural dialogue, and fostering accessible, inclusive, and dignified learning and working spaces where campus community members can thrive.
We would like to thank Dr. Margaret Moss for serving as interim Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion, and Dr. Eduardo Jovel for serving as interim Director of the First Nations House of Learning, during the transition.
We are grateful to the members of the Advisory Committee for their commitment of extensive time and energy throughout the search.
We look forward to working with Dr. al Shaibah, as she brings broad and deep experiences in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in community and in higher education.
Please join us in welcoming her to UBC.
