UBC Library addresses growing demand for help with Indigenous referencing

4 March, 2024

New training developed by UBC Library is helping to address the growing demand from all disciplines to learn more about incorporating Indigenous topics in coursework and research.

Traditionally, the X̱wi7x̱wa Library (which is the only Indigenous branch of an academic library in Canada) dealt with all Indigenous-related topics and requests.

Since the launch of UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan in 2020, the demand for Indigenous referencing has grown considerably due to efforts to indigenize the curriculum and to engage with Indigenous perspectives and Ways of Knowing. As a result, a working group was established in 2023 to discuss ways to increase the number of staff able to deal with these requests. UBC Library then created and delivered live training workshops to over 50 librarians and reference staff across both campuses on ways to approach answering basic Indigenous referencing questions.
