Much of Dr. Christopher Patterson’s work examines the intersection of race and video games—across both game development and play. We asked about what drew him to this topic, how he views the role of his own identity in his research, and about some of his key projects, including two podcasts that spotlight new works on Asian Studies topics.
Nominations are now open for 2023/24 UBC Okanagan teaching awards: Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation This award recognizes up to two awards for faculty members with continuing appointments and one award for instructors holding a full or part time limited-term appointment. A message from Deborah Buszard, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor I am pleased to announce that Dr. Ainsley Carry has been reappointed Vice-President, Students, for a second term starting April 1, 2024. Dr. Carry joined UBC in 2019, and has made many notable achievements during his first term. A passionate advocate for students, he led the restructure of the VP Students portfolio to elevate student health and career services.
When it comes to fine arts, it’s not as instinctive to think about “fieldwork.” But for a number of UBC Okanagan Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) students, the empty building faces of downtown Kelowna are fast becoming a welcoming mural canvas outside of the classroom.
When you hear the phrase “Every Child Matters” what comes to mind? According to the illustrator of the new Every Child Matters picture book, Karlene Harvey, “Every Child Matters empowers residential school survivors to speak about their childhood, and to acknowledge their experiences on their own terms, which is extremely validating and important. As a daughter of a residential school survivor my heart heals when I see my family and community reclaim their story, when they feel free to express their thoughts and reflections.”
