Preparing for extreme weather at UBC

As weather patterns shift towards snow, we would like to remind you of information available to help you prepare for extreme weather.

If UBC is subject to extreme winter weather conditions, the administration may decide to curtail in-person learning activities and other non-essential services. In the event of extreme weather, you are advised to regularly check https://www.ubc.ca/ for campus status updates.

Preparing faculty and staff in your department/unit for extreme weather:

• We recommend you determine which staff in your department/unit have responsibilities that are of an essential nature, such that they would be required to attend campus during extreme weather, and ensure they are aware of their responsibilities. For questions, or help in determining what work is of an essential nature, contact your HR Advisor
• You are requested to review your department/unit’s snow procedures, make any necessary updates, and share it with all faculty and staff in your department/unit.
• Please ensure that those in your department/unit know what to do if extreme weather prevents them from getting to campus, and that campus remains operational. For questions regarding policy in this scenario, contact your HR Advisor 
• Please review your approved hybrid work agreements and snow procedures within your department/units to support those who can work remotely when extreme weather prevents them from getting to campus: https://hr.ubc.ca/hybrid-work-ubc

We also recommend UBC students, faculty, staff and campus visitors download the UBC Safe Vancouver app and turn on push notifications to receive immediate information (e.g. weather advisories) and updates that are impacting the entire campus. Campus safety during extreme weather:

Supporting students impacted by extreme weather:
Faculty are encouraged to consider alternative arrangements to accommodate the needs of students who may be unable to travel safely to campus to attend class, write tests or turn in assignments, due to extreme weather conditions.
