    Search for a new Academic Director, UBC Learning Exchange

    UBC is embarking on a search for a new Academic Director, UBC Learning Exchange.Since its establishment in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES) in 1999, the Learning Exchange has become a trusted and valued contributor to the DTES community. It has developed a welcoming, informal and lively hub where UBC students, faculty and researchers, and DTES residents and organizations, connect, pursue common interests and learn from each other, in order to increase community and university capacity to bring about positive social change.

    Remote Work update

    Last year UBC announced the introduction of a Remote Work pilot program to formalize alternate work arrangements, where operationally feasible. While the program successfully launched last November, there were circumstances that impacted our ability to fully understand hybrid work, such as floods and subsequent gas rationing, and the evolution of COVID-19 with the Omicron variant.

    Announcing the appointment of new Dean, Faculty of Arts

    I am pleased to announce that Dr. Clare Haru Crowston has been appointed as the new Dean of the Faculty of Arts for a five-year term commencing no later than January 1, 2023. Dr. Crowston is a professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she currently serves as the Associate Dean for the Humanities and Interdisciplinary Programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

    Update on UBC’s budget for the 2022/23 fiscal year

    This week, the proposed UBC budget for 2022/23 was presented to the Board of Governors’ Finance Committee for review, in advance of consideration for approval by the full Board of Governors on March 31, 2022.

    2022 Celebrate Learning Week

    UBC’s 13th annual Celebrate Learning Week will take place from May 9-13. This year’s theme is Promoting Inclusivity and Accessibility, and we’d like to encourage all to take part by attending and/or hosting an event.

    Inviting proposals for the 2022 Continuous Learning Advancement Fund

    The Continuous Learning Advancement Fund (CLAF) supports the creation, renewal and expansion of non-degree learning opportunities at UBC Vancouver. Initially launched in 2019 as the Online Learning Advancement Fund, CLAF’s renewed focus is on growing UBC Vancouver’s capacity to serve continuous learners in British Columbia.

    UBC has procedures in place to ensure that staff in the following employee groups move to the midpoint of their salary range within a specified timeframe.     Dr. Rehan Sadiq appointed Provost and Vice-President Academic pro tem, UBC Okanagan

    I am pleased to announce that, effective February 1, 2022, Dr. Rehan Sadiq will serve as Provost and Vice-President, Academic pro tem, for UBC Okanagan. Dr. Sadiq is a professor of Civil Engineering and a Distinguished University Scholar, and currently holds the position of Executive Associate Dean in the School of Engineering at UBC Okanagan. He is also a co-lead of the Life Cycle Management Laboratory at UBC.

    Leadership update — Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Faculty Planning

    Dr. Pamela Ratner, Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Faculty Planning, will be stepping down from her role at the end of December 2021. Since being appointed to her role in 2015, Dr. Ratner has made a significant impact within the Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic and UBC as a whole.
