Call for proposals for the Black Faculty Cohort Hiring Initiative

This message was sent to executive, deans and other senior academic leaders, academic heads, directors and managers, and senior professional leaders in Vancouver.

23 February, 2023

Proposals are invited for UBC’s Black Faculty Cohort Hiring Initiative, which focuses on hiring a number of professors at the same time, either within or across departments, Faculties and/or across strategic research and teaching priority areas at the university.

This is one of a number of anticipated initiatives to support Black inclusion and excellence at UBC. In alignment with our commitment to advance the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education, and in response to recommendations of the university’s Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence Task Force report, the Black Faculty Cohort Hiring Initiative is aimed at increasing the representation of Black faculty members at UBC. The program supports the recruitment of tenure-track and tenured professors at all ranks across both the research and educational streams.

Academic Excellence Funding will be provided to match Faculty contributions for hiring a number of Black faculty members each year, for up to seven years. In the first phase of the program (2023/24), $900,000 in central funding will be available to hire up to 12 Black scholars. $300,000 per year will be available in subsequent years.

To learn more about the program and the application process, read more. The deadline for submissions is 3pm on May 17.

As one of the world’s leading universities, UBC is committed to taking steps and implementing programs to build a more inclusive community. As a leader, you play a crucial role in supporting the university to achieve this goal. I encourage you to share this information with your team and take the time to get involved and support this very important initiative.
