    UBCO researcher studies alternatives to fossil fuel derived energy

    As many nations work to go green, a significant question remains unanswered: how can the world decarbonize energy supplies in a sustainable, efficient and economically viable manner? Dr. Robert Godin, an assistant professor of Green Chemistry in UBC Okanagan’s Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, is working to find the answer.

    Protecting our future health

    UBC researchers are on a mission to understand how biological, social, and environmental factors interact to make us more susceptible to climate change. Their findings could hold the key to better health for everyone — starting with our most at-risk communities. A few summers ago, during British Columbia’s worst-ever wildfire season, Dr. Sarah Henderson began to receive worried messages from the families and friends of people with dementia.

    UBC faculty appointed to the 2023 Order of Canada

    On June 30, 2023, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, announced 85 new appointments to the Order of Canada. The Order of Canada is one of Canada's highest civilian honours. Its Companions, Officers and Members take to heart the motto of the Order: DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM ("They desire a better country").  The Order of Canada was created in 1967 to honour people whose service shapes our society, whose innovations ignite our imaginations, and whose compassion unites our communities.

    Community connections improve family and child wellbeing

    Researchers and Indigenous partners are confirming the strength of community by melding empirical data with lived experience. Through a culturally-relevant collaboration with members of Indigenous organizations, Dr. Judy Gillespie hopes to use cultural strengths and community-based approaches to improve child and family wellbeing, and combat the destructive legacy of colonial relationships with First Nation peoples.
