    Paid leave for staff between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day

    With the holiday season approaching, please note that certain UBC staff are eligible for paid leave during the university’s seasonal closure — the three normal working days between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. This year’s seasonal closure falls on December 28, 29, and 30, 2022.

    Leadership update – Faculty of Dentistry

    I wish to announce that Dr. Mary MacDougall has informed me of her decision to step down as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry next August, when her pro tem term comes to an end.  On behalf of the university, I would like to thank Dr. MacDougall for her steady leadership and for the key role she has played in the many successes and achievements of the Faculty of Dentistry over the past five years.

    Robert Helsley appointed as Associate Provost, UBC at Surrey

    Last year, UBC announced that it is expanding its presence in Surrey to build the university’s regional presence, as well as improve access to post-secondary education in the Fraser region. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Robert W. Helsley has been appointed as Associate Provost for the UBC at Surrey project, effective October 1, 2022 for a two-year term.  Dr. Helsley is the Grosvenor Professor of Cities, Business Economics and Public Policy at UBC Sauder School of Business where he has served as Dean from 2012 to 2022.

    Announcing the appointment of Dr. Michelle Stack as Academic Director, UBC Learning Exchange

    We are pleased to announce that Dr. Michelle Stack has been appointed as the Academic Director of the UBC Learning Exchange for a five-year term, commencing November 1, 2022.  Dr. Stack is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Studies, a former policy advisor, and a public commentator on education. Her research is focused on educational equity, knowledge translation and community-engaged research.

    External review of Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters program

    BC’s Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters (GCRC) program fosters collaboration and enables the formation and growth of interdisciplinary research excellence clusters. An external review of the program is being carried out to assess its effectiveness in supporting Research Excellence Strategy 6 (Collaborative Clusters) in UBC’s strategic plan.

    Rehan Sadiq appointed as Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Okanagan

    We are pleased to announce that Dr. Rehan Sadiq has accepted the position as UBC Okanagan’s Provost and Vice-President, Academic, for a five-year term.  Dr. Sadiq has been in this role on a pro tem basis since February 1, 2022, and has consistently shown thoughtful and seasoned leadership during that time.  We are grateful to Dr. Sadiq for his skilled guardianship of the Office of the Provost and Vice-President in the Okanagan over the past seven months and we are thrilled that he will remain at the helm of this role moving forward.
