Many mental health challenges emerge in childhood and persist into adulthood, significantly impacting everything from daily functioning to work and school performance, social relationships and long-term wellbeing. Early intervention and prevention strategies are urgently needed, and UBC researcher Dr. Sophia Frangou is at the forefront of a transformative new approach — personalized interventions based on brain imaging.

Apply to the Developing Leaders Program by Nov. 22
The Developing Leaders Program – which has evolved from the Managing at UBC Program – is now taking applications from eligible managers.The five-month program is aimed at equipping early-career managers in Vancouver and the Okanagan with the skills and knowledge required to lead with more confidence and effectiveness.The deadline for applications is noon on Nov. 22 and the program will begin on Jan. 23, 2025.

UBC delegation of 12 going to COP29
UBC’s largest ever delegation of 12 faculty members and students will participate in person and virtually in the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) being held in Baku, Azerbaijan this month.This event brings together countries, civil society, companies and people on the frontline of climate change to accelerate action. UBC holds “Official Observer” status and is allocated a set number of ‘badges’ that provide access to the negotiations and events.

2024 marks the 74th year that the University of British Columbia has hosted a Remembrance Day ceremony. All UBC students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend—to honour and remember all those who served in times of war, military conflict and peace.The university community is invited to join the event at the Vancouver campus War Memorial Gym on Nov. 11.

Benoit-Antoine Bacon
Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon joined UBC in November 2023, as the 17th President and Vice-Chancellor. Before joining UBC, he served in several academic leadership roles, including President and Vice-Chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa and Provost and VP (Academic) at Queen’s University in Kingston and at Concordia University in his hometown of Montreal. Dr. Bacon holds a PhD in neuropsychology from the University of Montreal, after which he undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. His research in the field of cognitive neuroscience focuses on the links between brain activity and perception in the visual, auditory and vestibular systems, as well as on multisensory integration. A year into his first term as President of UBC, Dr. Bacon shares how his career and lived experiences have shaped him as a leader.
