Reminder: Preparing for extreme weather at UBC
As weather patterns shift towards snow, please note that information is available to help you prepare for extreme weather on your campus.A UBC Bulletin and UBCO Admin News were issued for the Vancouver and the Okanagan campuses, respectively, with information on how to be prepared during winter weather, steps being taken to keep the campus safe, and how faculty members can support students.

UBC’s historic fire hall takes a slow, careful journey to its new temporary home
A 98-year-old took a slow, careful drive across UBC’s Vancouver campus this week—on a series of flatbed trucks.The Old Fire Hall, built in 1926, was lifted from its foundation and transported to a temporary home where it will be shrink-wrapped and parked until its permanent relocation as part of the Lower Mall Precinct Student Housing Redevelopment Project on the current St. John’s College Site.

Paid leave for staff between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
With the holiday season approaching, please note that certain UBC staff are eligible for paid leave during the university’s seasonal closure – the three normal working days between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.This year’s paid leave dates are Friday, Dec. 27; Monday, Dec. 30; and Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024.

Cecilia is a professor in the Department of Family Practice with the Faculty of Medicine. Through her research, she aims to reduce weight-based stigma and non-essential medical treatments by showing that women with obesity can have healthy, uncomplicated pregnancies.

Apply to the Developing Leaders Program by Nov. 22
The Developing Leaders Program – which has evolved from the Managing at UBC Program – is now taking applications from eligible managers.The five-month program is aimed at equipping early-career managers in Vancouver and the Okanagan with the skills and knowledge required to lead with more confidence and effectiveness.The deadline for applications is noon on Nov. 22 and the program will begin on Jan. 23, 2025.

UBC delegation of 12 going to COP29
UBC’s largest ever delegation of 12 faculty members and students will participate in person and virtually in the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) being held in Baku, Azerbaijan this month.This event brings together countries, civil society, companies and people on the frontline of climate change to accelerate action. UBC holds “Official Observer” status and is allocated a set number of ‘badges’ that provide access to the negotiations and events.
